Emission nebulae are interstellar clouds composed of various elements. When these clouds are hit by the x-rays of a nearby hot star the atoms become ionized and begin emitting photons that vary in color depending on the wavelength of the emission. The primary wavelengths imaged in Astrophotography are hydrogen-alpha, sulfur-ii, and oxygen-iii.
